Heidegger, at the time of his “second turn” (1943-1953), was deeply influenced by Taoism, not only by the direct inspiration of Zhuangzi’s thought of “uselessness”, but also and especially by Tao Te Ching, which he even translated together with Xiao Shiyi (萧师毅), and is said to have translated eight of them, although the original manuscripts have not been found.

But with the late publication of the Black Notebooks since 2014, multiple references to Tao Te Ching appear, especially in GA 97-102 after 1943. As we can see how important the publication of the Black Notebooks was! This also provides scholarly evidence for Heidegger’s “second turn” that we have proposed, and of course, dissipates many of the disavowals of the relation between Heidegger and Taoism.
